Jessica Campbell Joins Seattle Kraken in Historic NHL Appointment

In a monumental step for the National Hockey League, Jessica Campbell has been appointed to the Seattle Kraken coaching staff, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the league's history. Campbell's journey to this historic milestone is marked by her exceptional career and steadfast commitment to player development.

Trailblazing Career

Campbell's appointment to the Kraken is the latest achievement in a career filled with groundbreaking accomplishments. In 2022, she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) when she served as an assistant coach for the Coachella Valley Firebirds. During her tenure there, she managed the Firebirds’ power play and earned a reputation for her ability to develop young talent.

"During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development," said Kraken coach Dan Bylsma. "Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level."

Bylsma's endorsement highlights Campbell's influence on players such as Tye Kartye, who, under her guidance, won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for most outstanding rookie. Kartye’s success, characterized by his impressive tally of 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken, underscores Campbell’s ability to nurture and develop talent.

A Lifetime of Firsts

Campbell's journey to the NHL began long before her time with the Firebirds. In the 2014-15 season, Campbell served as team captain in the first-ever Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) All-Star Game, showcasing her leadership skills on the ice. She further distinguished herself in 2022 when she became the first woman to coach a men’s national team during the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Championship with Team Germany. Additionally, Campbell worked with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer during this championship.

"I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization," remarked Campbell.

Coaching Philosophy

Campbell's approach to coaching is characterized by a growth mindset and an unwavering dedication to her craft. "For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work," she said. "You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal."

Her role as a power-skating coach for top-level athletes, including Canadian national team member Natalie Spooner and NHL defenseman Joel Edmundson, is a testament to her technical expertise and ability to maximize player performance.

A Bright Future

As Campbell steps into her new role with the Kraken, she will likely be responsible for heading the team’s power play, an area where she has already demonstrated significant success. By incorporating her vast experience and innovative coaching strategies, Campbell is poised to make a lasting impact on the Kraken organization.

Her appointment comes at a promising time for the Kraken, who have recently signed 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour, adding further depth and experience to their roster. The addition of Campbell to the coaching staff represents not just a groundbreaking moment for inclusivity in the NHL, but also a strategic move to enhance the development and performance of the team.

"I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is," Campbell emphasized.

Jessica Campbell's historic appointment signals a progressive move for the NHL and solidifies her position as a trailblazer in the world of hockey. Her dedication, expertise, and pioneering spirit promise to shape the future of the Seattle Kraken and serve as an inspiration for aspiring coaches everywhere.
