Sean Payton's Comparison Between Bo Nix and Drew Brees

As Sean Payton embarks on his second season as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, the former New Orleans Saints coach aims to bring the same level of success he once enjoyed with Drew Brees. However, Payton's first year in Denver was anything but smooth sailing. Now, as the team looks to turn the corner, Payton finds himself drawing comparisons between his former quarterback and a rising star: Bo Nix.

Comparing Brees and Nix

During their time together with the Saints, Payton and Brees formed one of the most successful coach-quarterback duos in NFL history. Now, Payton sees similar traits in Bo Nix, the 12th overall pick in April's draft. “I used to say this all the time: The sack numbers are a reflection more on the quarterback than the offensive line. Brees was one of those guys, he was a tough sack. The ball came out, and I think Bo has traits like that,” Payton remarked.

Nix, who has played 61 college games, is noted for his pocket sense and ability to avoid taking unnecessary sacks. Payton further elaborated, “You see pretty good pocket sense. He doesn't take a lot of sacks. I think when he knows when the play's over, time to go, and then, I think he can make plays when he's going.” In essence, Nix's style mirrors that of Brees, who was sacked more than 30 times in a single season only twice over his 20-year career and averaged just 22 sacks per season during his 19 years as a starter.

The Challenge Ahead

Last season, Russell Wilson was sacked an alarming average of nearly 44 times per season during his initial 12-year career span. With such numbers, the Broncos' offensive line has been under scrutiny. However, Payton emphasizes that the quarterback's ability to sense and avoid pressure plays a crucial role. "I would say mentally, [Nix] wants to know as much and as fast as he can. I think there's maybe a maturity level because, again, [Nix] played 61 games [in college] and when [the Saints] got Drew, it was off of his rookie contract and coming off an injury," Payton said.

Given these dynamics, it's evident that a quarterback's experience and maturity can significantly impact the sack statistics, often deflecting some of the blame directed at the offensive line. As Payton works to stabilize the Broncos’ offense, one can't help but wonder if Nix might emerge as a pivotal figure, much like Brees did in New Orleans.

Quarterback Competition

Adding another layer to the mix is Jarrett Stidham, currently competing for the starting job with the Denver Broncos. Stidham's presence ensures that competition remains fierce, a factor that could play a crucial role in pushing both quarterbacks to elevate their game. The drive to secure the leading role might just foster the growth needed for either Nix or Stidham to meet Payton's high expectations.

The Monumental Task

The parallels Payton draws between Brees and Nix underscore the immense potential he sees in the young quarterback. If Nix can live up to these expectations, he might just be the catalyst the Broncos need to revamp their offensive strategy. Given Brees' anticipated induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026, it's clear that the benchmark set by the veteran quarterback is exceptionally high.

Payton's optimistic viewpoint on Nix’s potential has added a fascinating subplot to Denver’s forthcoming season. Whether Nix can indeed echo Brees’ success remains to be seen, but with Payton's guidance, the Broncos might very well be on the path to rediscovering their winning ways.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Payton and his ability to harness the similarities he sees in Bo Nix and Drew Brees. And if the young quarterback can replicate even a fraction of Brees' success, Denver fans will have plenty to cheer about in the coming years.
