The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their offensive line with the signing of Mekhi Becton. Originally intended to serve as a swing tackle behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton’s versatility is already proving invaluable.
Meeting a New Challenge
The signing couldn't have come at a better time, as the Eagles are navigating the absence of Tyler Steen due to an ankle injury. Steen's unavailability has left a void at the starting right guard position, and Becton has stepped in to fill the gap. During his first practice with the first team, Becton lined up at right guard and demonstrated his prowess by neutralizing the formidable Jalen Carter during 11-on-11 drills.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed his satisfaction with Becton's adaptability and performance, saying, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."
A Mentor On and Off the Field
Becton's journey with the Eagles began with a few unexpected days on the sidelines, as he did not practice during the initial stages of training camp. However, he made the most of this time by staying engaged and learning from his teammates. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton said.
His time on the sidelines provided a unique opportunity to observe and absorb the team's dynamics, which has seemingly fast-tracked his integration into the starting lineup. Becton's proactive approach has clearly paid off, as he now holds a crucial role within the offensive line, even as a member of the second-team lineup.
A Versatile Asset
One of the most compelling aspects of Becton's addition to the Eagles is his versatility. Landon Dickerson, the team’s left guard, elaborated on the value Becton brings: "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."
Becton's ability to adapt to multiple positions along the offensive line not only provides the Eagles with depth but also offers a strategic advantage. His flexibility ensures that the team can navigate injuries and other unforeseen challenges more effectively.
Despite the challenges of bouncing between different positions, Becton has handled it with grace and determination. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" Dickerson added.
Ready for Action
Becton himself remains upbeat and prepared for whatever comes his way, embodying the next-man-up mentality that is crucial in the NFL. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton said.
With no official word on the duration of Tyler Steen's absence, Becton's readiness to step in wherever needed becomes even more significant. His contributions could very well be a deciding factor in the Eagles' performance as the season progresses.
As the Eagles continue their training camp, all eyes will be on how Becton further solidifies his place in the team. His early performances and the high praise from both coaches and teammates indicate a promising fit, and his versatility only adds to the arsenal the Eagles can deploy on game days.
In an NFL season where depth and adaptability can often be the difference-makers, the addition of Mekhi Becton might just be a critical move for the Eagles.
