Jaylon Johnson Reacts to NFL Top 100 Snub
Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson recently found himself at the center of a contentious debate following the release of the NFL's Top 100 list. Despite an exceptional 2023 season, Johnson was conspicuously absent from the rankings, sparking both disbelief and frustration.
In 2023, Johnson solidified his reputation as one of the premier cornerbacks in the league. He garnered second-team All-Pro honors and secured a coveted Pro Bowl selection. Statistically, he reached new heights by recording a career-high four interceptions, including his first pick-six, and one forced fumble. Furthermore, he demonstrated his defensive prowess by holding opponents to a mere 50.9 passer rating when targeted and allowing just a 55% completion rate.
However, none of these impressive achievements were enough to earn him a spot on the NFL's Top 100 list. The list, which recognized only two Bears players—wide receiver Keenan Allen at No. 51 and defensive end Montez Sweat at No. 82—left Johnson puzzled and agitated.
Johnson did not mince words when expressing his feelings about the snub. "Bull----," he stated emphatically. "It's bull----. There ain't no way. I don't know how you make Pro Bowl, All-Pro and not [be] a Top 100 guy. I could've been 101 I guess, but goddamn, [New York Jets quarterback] Aaron Rodgers didn't even play in the season and he was voted [92nd]."
Clearly, Johnson took the omission personally, pointing to the logical inconsistencies that underpinned the voting process. "I mean, hey, everybody makes mistakes, it ain't just the media that do it. Players clearly -- if they voted for it -- they made some god damn mistakes. But it is what it is. At the end of the day I know the truth and it's alright, I got some more for them."
Johnson's confidence in his abilities and the respect he commands from opponents only added to his bewilderment. "It's disrespectful because I go out there, line up and I know receivers go out there and can't say that I'm not one of best players that they play against," he remarked.
Despite his frustration, Johnson remains undeterred and more motivated than ever. The snub has given him extra fuel as he looks forward to another season with the Bears. "So I mean, whatever it is, it happened. Doing it wouldn't have moved me to where I'm complacent, but just to see it -- ain't no way there are 100 guys who are better. Ain't no way. Especially guys who didn't play, who were hurt, played half- ain't no f---ing way. Excuse my language. Ain't no way. Ain't no way," he asserted.
Johnson's passion and determination underscore his commitment to proving his doubters wrong. His recent accomplishments have already earned him a lucrative four-year, $76 million contract extension with the Bears, a testament to his value and skill on the field. As he gears up for another season, Johnson is poised to build on his success and continue to demonstrate why he should not be overlooked.
In the cutthroat world of professional football, being omitted from the NFL's Top 100 list is more than just an oversight—it can be seen as a slight that ignites a fire within the most competitive athletes. For Jaylon Johnson, this latest snub is merely a stepping stone on his path to reaffirming his place among the NFL's elite. His peers and competitors alike will be keenly aware of the lessons that come with underestimating players like him, who use such slights as powerful motivation.
