DeSean Jackson Retires, Endorses Jalen Hurts as Eagles' Future
Philadelphia Eagles’ iconic wide receiver DeSean Jackson has hung up his cleats after a storied 15-year career in the NFL. The announcement came from the NovaCare Complex, the Eagles' training facility, where Jackson took a moment to praise his quarterback, Jalen Hurts, highlighting his talent and mindset.

Jackson, who is celebrated as one of the most formidable deep threats in the history of the league, expressed his confidence in Hurts, noting that he had recognized the quarterback's potential early on. “I definitely saw Jalen Hurts before what the world sees now,” Jackson stated. “I feel like he’s just starting. I feel like he’s going to be here for a long time. He’s going to have some special moments in Philadelphia.”

In a symbolic gesture marking the end of his professional journey, Jackson signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Eagles—the team that originally drafted him 49th overall back in 2008. During his initial six-season run with the Eagles, Jackson earned three Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro honor.

His statistical legacy with the Eagles is notable; he ranks third in receiving yards (6,512), sixth in receptions (379), and ninth in receiving touchdowns (35) over 95 games. Additionally, as a punt returner, Jackson holds the second position in punt returns (132) and third in punt return yards (1,296). His four punt return touchdowns—a record he shares with former running back and return specialist Darren Sproles—cement his place in Eagles lore.

The Eagles plan to celebrate Jackson’s retirement by naming him an honorary captain at their upcoming game at Lincoln Financial Field this Sunday.

A Special Connection with Hurts

Jackson's bond with Hurts was solidified during his second tenure with the Eagles from 2019-2020. A highlight of this partnership was Jackson's final catch for the franchise—an impressive 81-yard touchdown pass from Hurts during a Week 16 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

This connection unfolded amid the tumultuous 2020 season under then-head coach Doug Pederson. It was also during this period that Hurts stepped up as a cost-effective backup to the struggling starter Carson Wentz.

Reflecting on the dynamics of that season, Jackson recalled advocating for Hurts even when Wentz was the starting quarterback. “Everybody was like, ‘Why would we pick Jalen Hurts in the second round?’” said Jackson, who saw something unique in Hurts’ approach to the game.

Hurts, who trained with Jackson in Florida, exhibited a level of maturity that impressed the veteran receiver. “It was actually, he made it convenient because I trained in Tampa and he came out there and trained with me,” Jackson explained. “We trained for like a whole week. We were able to build. I had just seen that his mentality was different then.”

Jackson described Hurts, an Alabama native, as having the mature mindset of “an uncle or an old father.” This composure and demeanor, according to Jackson, signaled that Hurts was destined for greatness.

The transition from Wentz to Hurts was accelerated by Wentz’s $128 million extension, which became a point of contention as his performance declined towards the end of the 2020 season. Eventually benched, Wentz forced a trade to the Indianapolis Colts, paving the way for Hurts to take the reins.

Fast forward to 2023, and Hurts has emerged as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. With an astounding record of 27 wins in his last 29 starts—including 16 victories out of 17 attempts—and a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive wins against teams with winning records, Hurts has proven himself as an exceptional talent. Notably, this streak is the longest of its kind since at least 1950, underscoring the significant impact Hurts has had since taking over as the Eagles’ starting quarterback.

As Jackson steps away from the gridiron, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence and a belief in the bright future of his successor, Jalen Hurts. The Eagles, and their fans, will no doubt remember Jackson's contributions fondly as they look ahead to more "special moments" promised by the rising star quarterback he so fervently endorsed.
