Determined to prove himself, Haliburton joined Wisconsin United, a team based in Milwaukee, even though it required a grueling three-hour round trip from his home. The move proved fortuitous as it paired him with coach Bryan Johnikin, who was instrumental in reshaping Haliburton’s game. During one notable practice session, Johnikin used his 3-year-old grandson as a defender to showcase Haliburton’s low release point, an unconventional form that would later set him apart.
Haliburton's unique shot starts with the ball held in front of his chest and finishes with a catapult-like motion, often producing significant sidespin. While it may not be textbook, it’s undeniably effective. "To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it," stated Pacers guard TJ McConnell, encapsulating the general sentiment around Haliburton’s shooting style.
This distinctive form has led Haliburton to consistent success from behind the arc. In six seasons spanning his time at Iowa State and in the NBA, he has shot below 40% from three-point range just once.
