France's Men's Basketball Advances to Semifinals in 2024 Paris Olympics

As the 2024 Paris Olympics heat up, France's men's basketball team delivered a critical victory over Canada in the quarterfinals, cementing their place in the semifinals. However, the game wasn't without its surprises. Rudy Gobert, whose presence is usually a cornerstone for the team, played only three minutes due to a finger injury and strategic decisions by French coach Vincent Collet.

Strategic Decisions and Injury Concerns

The sudden absence of Gobert from the starting lineup turned heads, especially given his prominent NBA stature. Coach Vincent Collet opted for a different approach, starting Victor Wembanyama at center and Guerschon Yabusele at power forward. Isaia Cordinier replaced Evan Fournier to bolster the team's defensive capabilities.

"They play small ball. I wanted Wemby to start at five, that’s why I put Yabusele at four. The other change was Isaia Cordinier for Evan Fournier because I wanted a defensive starting five," Collet explained.

This tactical maneuver paid off handsomely. Guerschon Yabusele and Isaia Cordinier combined for 42 points, showcasing remarkable synergy and impact on the game. Even though Wembanyama finished with a modest seven points, the collective effort was evident.

Gobert’s Limited Playtime

Gobert, who had sustained a finger injury in practice that necessitated surgery before the game, understood his role in the altered lineup. Despite the setback, he maintained a positive outlook.

"I have confidence in my teammates, the coaches. The plan worked, given how we started the match. There were several reasons why I didn’t play, between the matchups but also what can happen in training, with the injuries. It was a good decision in any case. I was on the operating table last night. To be able to play in an Olympic quarterfinal, it was incredible," Gobert commented.

Coach Collet also addressed Gobert's limited minutes, highlighting both the injury and the effectiveness of the game's new strategy. "Not only. It’s the main one. He’s a good player. I know he has pain in his finger despite the surgeon saying he could play. He didn’t know exactly, but finally, this morning, he said, ‘I can play.’ My idea was to protect him if I could do it. As it was working well with the other big men, I preferred to keep him on the bench. He will be ready for the next game," Collet noted.

France's Victory and Semi-Final Expectations

France's victory over the previously unbeaten Canadian team underscored their tactical versatility and depth, key factors that contributed to their success. Notably, Draymond Green weighed in on Gobert’s situation, stating, "To be taken out of the lineup on any other team in the Olympics as an NBA player not named Team USA is kind of crazy."

With this significant win, France now prepares for a semifinal matchup with Germany. The anticipation builds around whether Gobert will regain his starting position for this crucial game. Nevertheless, Gobert remains committed to making a full comeback and contributing to his team's pursuit of Olympic glory.

France continues to demonstrate resilience and strategic adaptation. As they advance, the contributions of the entire roster, including key players and tactical adjustments from the coaching staff, will undoubtedly remain crucial.
