The California Classic, a staple in the NBA Summer League calendar, has once again delivered an exciting and action-packed event. Spanning four days across Sacramento's Golden 1 Center and San Francisco's Chase Center, this year's event featured a mix of young talent and emerging storylines that captivated basketball fans.
Round-Robin Competition in Sacramento
Sacramento played host to the Kings, Hornets, Spurs, and the Chinese National Team in a round-robin format. One of the standout performers was Stephon Castle, the San Antonio Spurs' much-hyped No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Castle wasted no time showcasing his skillset, logging 18 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in his final summer league game.
"I'm comfortable really anywhere out on the court," Castle said. "I will say I'm probably most comfortable on the ball, but if I play off the ball, I still feel 100% comfortable there. Just being with the kinda team that we have, I feel like we will have five guys that can dribble, pass, and shoot. The positions are out of the equation a little bit."
However, not all was smooth for every team. The Hornets' No. 6 pick, Tidjane Salaün, unfortunately missed the competition due to a minor laceration near his knee. Despite his absence, the games remained highly competitive.
Excitement at San Francisco's Chase Center
Simultaneously, San Francisco’s Chase Center became a battleground for the Warriors, Heat, Lakers, and a second Kings summer league team. The Warriors managed to edge out Sacramento 91-90 in a thrilling final game, a victory that secured them the inaugural "Mitch Richmond Trophy" in the Battle of NorCal Summer League game.
The Warriors had reason to celebrate, but it was Keon Ellis who turned heads despite his team's loss to the Warriors. Ellis put up an impressive 30 points, showcasing his skills and reminding fans of his 41.7% shooting accuracy on 3-pointers from last season.
Bronny James: A Tale of Resilience
Among the notable players was Bronny James, who played for the Lakers. Plagued by knee swelling, Bronny missed the anticipated game against the Warriors but made his mark in other matches. He scored three points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists, and had two steals against Miami. Over the event, he accumulated seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals, demonstrating his all-around capabilities despite the setback.
Another player who made a significant impact was Knecht. Although he shot 13-of-43 (30.2%) from the floor and 4-of-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc throughout the event, his 20-point game against the Heat was a highlight, proving his potential as a scoring threat.
